NYC mayoral election results : Polls closing soon in Mamdani-Cuomo race

Voters in New York City are turning out in large numbers for a closely-watched mayoral election that pits Democrat Zohran Mamdani against independent Andrew Cuomo.Polls will close at 9pm on Tuesday with results expected shortly after.
Voters in the states of New Jersey and Virginia are also choosing new governors, while those in California are deciding whether to approve new congressional maps that could flip as many as five Republican-held House seats to Democratic control in the 2026 midterm elections.
In New York City, opinion polls show Mamdani, a 34-year-old state assembly member, holding a clear lead over Cuomo, the former governor of New York, who is running as an independent after losing the Democratic primary.
Mamdani, who calls himself a democratic socialist, has drawn liberal voters with plans for free childcare, free bus transport and a rent freeze affecting roughly one million rent-regulated New Yorkers. If elected, he’ll be the city’s first Muslim mayor.
